Auto tort question

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with...
Brief history: In May, I loan my boyfriend my car (2003 VW Jetta).
It is stolen, he files a police report and we wait. Two days later
the thief/thieves wreck it into a used-car lot and hits four cars
there. The next day I stop at the used-car lot to collect my
belongings and have a pleasant conversation with the owner. He tells
me this is the third time this has happened and he does not have
insurance. The police in my town are awful to work with and no one is
ever caught.
Fast forward to today (8/14)...I get a summons from the owner of the
used-car lot seeking a mediation in this case because my car damaged 5
of his cars. I am being sued for negligence because my boyfriend was
the last known driver (before it was stolen) of the car.
Basically I'm asking how I should approach this. The car was stolen.
Everything that happened after that point was out of my control. Would
this even hold up in court?
Please help a scared gal!
Thanks. You can either email me directly or post a reply.

Contact your insurance company, They should have a duty to defend you;
that's one of the things you pay insurance premiums for. On the other
hand, if you don't let them defend you, they may also refuse to pay
for any damages the owner wins from you.
Even if the lot owner's claim is as without merit as it sounds, it is
conceivable that you will lose if you do not defend it properly. Your
insurance company should provide lawyers who know how to defend and
when to settle.

Where are you located? Based upon that scenario, it shouldn't. Is your
name on the police report too? I sure hope so. You should contact your
insurance company ASAP. They should refer the case to an attorney.

Oh yes my name is written all over that police report. In talking
with my insurance company first thing this morning, they are assigning
me an attorney. They also told me that when this first happened in
May, the owner of the car-lot already tried to sue them to no avail.
They believe it is an unmeritable claim and most likely will not even
have to be mediated. This has happened to this poor sap's car lot
three times and back in May he told me he either can't afford
insurance or can not get insurance because of this.
Oh well. Now it's just a waiting game.
