Jews wary of Jews for Jesus

Robin Wilk, the head of the Denver campaign for Jews for Jesus, is
very diplomatic when I tell her I categorically reject Jesus as my
savior.
Before readers send me reams of Scripture, a DVD of "The Passion" or
pray for my soul - I have a justification for this sacrilegious
declaration. I'm Jewish.
Frankly, I didn't have much choice in the decision. My parents -
without my consent - hired a sadistic circumciser to sanction a
covenant between a young boy and God. Now, I admit, I'm pretty happy
they did.
I believe Robin and her cult are spiritual people. I believe Jesus has
changed their lives. They have, however, flagrantly disregarded
America's unspoken credo: Leave me alone.
For most of the Jews I spoke to, the numerous evangelical Christians
they've met, befriended and worked with have never tried to convert
them, perform an exorcism or otherwise undermine their religious
affiliation. In fact, they have been great friends, resolute
supporters of Israel and the Jewish community. The type of people you
would love to have as neighbors.
The loonies hanging out under the billboard on Quebec Avenue, the ones
handing out fliers on the 16th Street Mall, the group holed up at the
Cherry Creek Community Center, are another story.
While leaders of Denver's Jewish Community say they are unequivocally
committed to the free exercise of religion and the constitutional
rights of free speech, and opposed to discrimination of any sort, they
have a big problem with Jews for Jesus.
"They're very deceptive," explains Orthodox Rabbi Daniel Alter. "They
try to target the easiest to deceive and convince them that there is
no contradiction between Jewish values and believing in Jesus as the
messiah. Very often the proof of their creed is to take verses and
very often quote them out of context."
The San Francisco-based cult was founded in the 1970s by a Denver
native named Martin Rosen. He later changed his name to the more
Jewish "Moishe." (Surely, Jews will be more susceptible to a Moishe
than a Martin, right?)
Moishe's group has begun a two-week campaign targeting the 70,000
Coloradans in the Denver-Boulder area who call themselves Jews. They
insist that accepting Jesus is the most Jewish thing you can do.
Now, to most Jews, the group is about the silliest thing they've ever
heard. Still, this vibrant community is concerned about the misleading
tactics that have encouraged some to take the bait.
"It's the vulnerable in our community we're concerned about," says
Reform Rabbi Eliot Baskin, president of the Rocky Mountain Rabbinical
Council.
Rabbi Baskin is concerned about "the Russian immigrant that doesn't
know any better, when they go up to Colorado Boulevard and see a Jews
for Jesus sign in Cyrillic."
He's worried about "the people in nursing homes or hospitals; this is
taking advantage of people using manipulative and deceptive tactics.
That's what's so offensive to me."
Wilk cares little if she offends, but she strongly disagrees that
there is any trickery going on.
"In terms of being deceptive, what is wrong with us standing out on
the street with shirts that say 'Jews for Jesus'?" she asks. "There is
no deception involved, as far as bringing uneducated Jews in the fold.
Jews can speak for themselves."
Rabbi Baskin says he holds no ill will toward a person who says, "Hey,
I'm Christian and I'd like to tell you about Christianity," or, "Hey,
there, I'm Muslim and I want to talk to you about Islam."
But he does have a problem with those who misrepresent themselves as
"something which they are not and deliberately misquote, mistranslate
and misappropriate religious text to twist them to something they are
not intended to be."
Can Jews be for Jesus? Doubtful. Do they have a right to proselytize?
You bet.
But Denver's Jews don't have to listen.
