How much was it? Rather than hiring legal counsel, if it's under the
jurisidictional limit for small claims court, you can go to small claims
court (filing fee is about $100US) and get a judgment there.
File a complaint with the State licensing agency where your air-conditioner
repair person is licensed (if so licensed).
File a complaint with the police for theft (or something like that) too.

I hired a repairman out of the yellow pages to replace my exterior
air-conditioning unit. To make a long story short, he cashed my deposit
and
never came back to replace the air-conditioning unit. He will not return
my
calls.
What chance do I really have of getting my money back? All I have is the
cashed check which has his driver's license number. The address of his
company is non-existent although it's listed in the BBB. Through my
company
I get legal counsel at a reduced cost so I feel there is value in pursuing
this wrongdoing.
