Question on Rental Agreements

I rented a appartment for 1 year.
I moved out on the end date of the lease.
They then tried to say that I have to give 30 days notice to terminate the
lease.
They're trying to charge me for another month that I didn't live there.
Is this legal?
I always thought that the 30 days thing was only for if you want your depost
back.

You don't owe anything more unless the rental agreement says so. Read
it carefully.

No. The 30 day thing applies anytime there is something in the lease
or in the law which says a party must give 30 days notice in order to
terminate a lease or other tenancy. The security deposit has nothing
to do with it. In your case, you are not terminating a lease. It
expired. So there was no need for a 30 day notice, unless the lease
says otherwise.

Really I would need to know the state, but if you fullfilled your
lease they should have had constructive notice that you would be
moving out.
It would depend on the state landlord/tenant laws, but I don't think
that they could hold you responsible for the momths rent, nor could
they hold it against your deposit.
Your best bet is discuss it with your local legal aide attorney.
You could call the State Bar office to find out their number.
Sometimes they are listed under Legal Aide.

As other replies have stated, your obligation to pay for the 30 days after
you give notice is controlled by:
1) the terms of your lease
2) statute, (usually state law)
In CA the controlling statute is Civil Code
