Thanks for the reply - but I passed it on to her, and she says that Legal
Aid (at least in our area?) doesn't do child custody and support cases any
longer.
Any other ideas?

They usually have low-cost or free services for the indigent. Also check

I have a friend (honestly!!) who has 4 kids, and is on disability for brain
damage from a car accident. Her hubby was pretty much a loser, and left her
after she was no longer able to support him. He was ordered to pay only $200
a month for his 3 kids
