Steve, In the US, churches have an "automatic" tax exempt status. So if you do not file the 501C your parishioners still can claim their donations for tax purposes. However if a parishioner gets audited by the IRS they may have to prove that y

I've stated a non-profit corporation. Namely a church. I notice this 501C status is very conditional. The government can pull it if they want and then causes an instant liability to anyone who contributed. I'm also told that even if a church isn't a 50
