post-contractual research for innovation

Before going in details, here is my question: Can I
work/extend/innovate, and possibly get a patent on some research that
I initiated during my last job as a research associate at a
university?
At some time in the job, I had experimented for some techniques. Then,
I also got impression of success, but that proved wrong by later
analysis. Further attempts could not be made due to other
assignments/interests.
The research contract required to disclose/hand-over all developments
to the superior. But it is silent regarding the rights on
research/int-property that happens after the expiry of contract.
