Hi, I'm new to this newsgroup. I am hoping that someone could offer advice on how to handle a problem my son is having with his educational institution. Basically, they have recinded advice that was made by the assistant registrar. I believe this post makes sense without some of the written documents I have but if you want a copy of Steve's "timeline" of how things unfolded I can provide that too. Thanks, David Interinstitutional agreement rescinded by Sibewa College Steve Thompson, in his third year at Sibewa College recently completed two Middleville University Organic Chemistry classes through an interinstitutional agreement between Sibewa College and Middleville University. Organic I was taken during Middleville's summer I and Organic II taken during Middleville's Summer II quarter. His grade for Organic I was reported without problem. However, his Organic II class taken in the summer is another matter. The problem as I understand it is as follows. Steve was told by the Associate Registrar at Sibewa College that Sibewa didn't do interinstitutional classes during Middleville's summer II term (when Orgo II was taught), although Orgo I was fine, because Sibewa College's spring quarter overlapped Middleville's Summer I semester. However, the Associate Registrar, told Steve that he could take the Orgo II class interinstitutional during the summer if he registered for Orgo II and had the Middleville Prof. report his grades during the fall term. Steve obtained the agreement of the summer and fall professors at Middleville to do just that-report his Organic II grade during the fall. Steve completed the Organic II course and thought everything was fine. On August 18, Steve received notification that he needed to meet with the Registrar to discuss the interinstitutional enrollment for Organic II chemistry. He thought that all that he would need to do is remind the registrar's office that they had told him to take the class during the summer and have the grade reported in the fall. However, that was not the case. He was directed to the registrar's office where he unexpectedly met with the Provost, Registrar, and Associate Registrar. Steve was told that he would not receive credit for the Organic II class unless he applied to Middleville as a guest student and paid the course fee, also the class would be considered a transfer credit rather than interinstitutional enrollment. During this meeting the Registrar did acknowledge that the Associate Registrar had suggest the above course of action to Steve and that he had acted in good faith. Nonetheless, they were going to require him to register and pay for the class. Steve wrote a letter to Registrar dated August 20 and asked that Sibewa honor the agreement to pay for Organic II or provide a letter explaining why the agreement would not be honored. The Registrar replied on August 25 and made what Steve believes are false statements and a threat to his academic record. Please see the attached, Organic Chemistry II Timeline, Letter to the Registrar, Reply from the Registrar, and Interinstitutional Enrollment forms. -I understand that the Assistant Registrar should not have given Steve the advice she did, but I believe the college needs to honor the agreement that was made under the Associate Registrar's direction. I am disappointed with the college for the tactics that were used to attempt to get Steve to go along with paying for the class. -We need advice on how to handle this situation. I am also concerned about the status of Steve's Organic II grade. Steve did receive an A in the class. (by the way, I have changed the names of the colleges)

David, Forgive me but I find this somewhat confusing. Your son was registered at a college, S. but wished to take two courses at another college, M. There was an inter-institutional agreement that applied to one course, Org. I. By this do you mean that your son paid tuition at his college, S. and then his college, S. paid for Org. I at the other college, M. or did your son pay all of the necessary fees to take Org. I at M. in addition to his regular tuition And then we get to the question of Org. II. Did your son pay either college for this course? From your post it sounds as if M. has not been paid for Org. II. It does not sound as if S. agreed to pay for this course. Is your son now registered to take Org. II at S.with the belief that this will pay for the course at M.? From your post, which is your son's version of the truth, it is not clear how M. was to be paid for Org. II. The position of S. makes more sense. It sounds as if your son was confused. But what's the problem? If your son pays M. and transfers the credit to S. then he will have completed Org. II. Assuming that he is now registered for Org. II at S. he should change this and take some other class. In your post you refer to various attachments that I do not see. Good luck, Dave M.
