hi, I am writing on behalf of my wife. We got married in NY in 2000. My wife did not change her name (surname) upon the marriage because she did not want to lose her US entry visa. We were temporarily in US as exchange visitor workers. In 2004, we moved to Europe and now we have to register our marriage in a local Marriage License Bureau. At the registration of foreign marriages our law gives us the opportunity to change surname so this time my wife wants to change her surname by hyphenating her maiden name with my surname. That means she is obligated to change her passport. However, as far as I know our marriage records (and all US proofs of identity) in USA cannot be changed to record a surname my wife decided to use now. My wife still have bank accounts in the USA. So we wonder if my wife has to change her name on her accounts and banking cards or not.If not, will it be a problem when my wife come in person with her new passport to withdraw money? Or maybe anybody knows, if in this particular case my wife has rights to change her surname also in NY wedding registry? How to do that? Must she come in person? Thanx in advance for your answers
