A few years back, I had a elective operation at an eye clinic in south Alabama. I read everything on all the forms (except one) and I did not see anything that indicated my records would be shared. About a half hour before the operation, a nurse came around to the waiting room and offered sedatives to take the "edge off". I had a pretty good dose and the nurse put colored, adhesive dots on my forehead to show the doseage. When it was time for the operation, I was feeling fairly loopy. I was escorted to the operating room and before the surgery started, another lady brought a multi-page form for me to sign. I told her I could not read due to the drugs and asked what it was for. She said the form would allow the clinic to access my medical records in the event of an emergency. Like a fool, I signed it. I now have absolute evidence that my medical records have been compromised. At this point, I'm thinking that my records have been released to some sort of data-mining operation from this clinic. A month ago, I wrote to the clinic and asked them if my records had been released to any third parties. I also asked for copies of the papers I had signed. They have ignored the written request. I think it's probably time to get a lawyer involved. What kind of lawyer would be the best for making this inquiry and perhaps further action as necessary? Any recommendations really appreciated.
