why a court-appointed lawyer?

I heard on the grapevine that my bag lady cousin has a "court-appointed
lawyer" to take care of her finances. I called the bankruptcy court in her
area and was told that she had not filed there. Under what other
non-criminal circumstances might a person be assigned a lawyer by the court?
If I'm so curious, should I check with the criminal court, too?

If your cousin had some form on mental illness where she could not care for
herself or her finances, a petition could have been filed in a probate court
to appoint a guardian (of her personally) and a conservator (to care for her
assets and finances).

Who would have filed said petition? A creditor? A social worker? A
clergyman?

In most cases, a relative who is concerned about the person's mental state
will file the petition or ask social services to file one. On the other
hand, the person's physician or a physician in a psychiatric facility may
refer the case to social services if no relative is available to file a
petition. After a petition is filed, the court would have appointed a
lawyer as guardian-ad-litem and, if necessary a guardian and conservator
(both of whom may be lawyers if no competent family member could be found).
Unfortunately, without more information, I am just speculating. There may
be many other circumstances that would result in appointment of a lawyer for
your cousin. The scenario that I set out above, seems to be as likely as
any other.
