http://www.vaildaily.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20031117/NEWS/311170106 Celebrity matters. There, I've said it. It mattered when O.J. Simpson was acquitted. It mattered when Leona Helmsley was convicted. It matters in the Rosie O'Donnell civil trial, though even as I write these words, the outcome of that matter remains up in the chilly New York autumn air. If you don't think celebrity matters, ask yourself why there are cameras staked out for Rosie and her supporting cast on the courthouse stairs day after ceaseless day? After all, the Rosie O'Donnell case, once you subtract out the imposing bulk of Rosie herself, is just a plain vanilla breach of contract matter. If it wasn't Rosie, you'd just plain yawn. Why, too, if not for celebrity, this tireless fascination with the Kobe Bryant case and all things Kobeesque? Why are Martha Stewart's Imclone travails likely better known to you than the contents of your own portfolio? In this star-struck, celebrity-addled culture of ours, celebrity does indeed count. And it counts for quite a bit.

Thanks to people like hoggboy, can the accused get a fair trial? Um, no, but thanks for playing. Just passify yourselves in this fantasy world where your little heros never do anything remotely wrong, and when they do, just continue to be closed minded and hate and say stupid, hurtful #@($ about a chick you don't know to make yourselves feel vindicated and superior. What it must be to live in the foggy fan life....

She's on trial? News to me. For what? Ah god, why do I keep responding to threads crossposted to soc.men, misc.legal, alt.true-crime and alt.gossip.celebrities? The fun part is trying to figure out which group the dummies are coming from. -P

This article - even through the link - seems unfinished.

I can follow that logic. Guilty man acquitted, innocent man ought to be acquitted, too.

I learned a long time ago that "heroes" often do wrong things. I guess if one qualified it, one could call Kobe a "basketball hero". I know for a FACT that he's done wrong things. Long before he cheated on his wife, he shot four airballs in one playoff game. To me, that's just wrong. Can the accused get a fair trial when certain relevant facts may not be allowed in court? Why don't we make it completely fair, and just lay both of these persons' entire lives out on the table. It's going to come down to believability anyway, so why should either one of them have anything to hide, eh? I mean, you could do the same thing with Bryant. Search and search his backround and his history, and if you can find any dirt that impeaches his credibility, then let's weigh it against whatever can be known about the accuser. What I want to say is... Why do YOU automatically believe the accuser, in spite of evidence that she may be less than credible, while the accused has earned a reputation as a gentleman prior to encountering her?
