Dead Tenant What's The Rules?

I rent a room in my house and a longtime tenant of mine died on October
22. =A0 He left about $5OO worth of clothing, tools books and other
items in his room.
He has been estranged from some grown- up children for 30 years. Their
whereabouts are unknown.
Other friends and I helped share the burial expenses of $3500 to put him
in a local Veterans Cemetery. =A0 He left thousands in debt.
I want to give his stuff to Goodwill, but I am hearing different
information about what I must do. That I need to put an advertisement in
the paper to find survivors, that I cannot give anything away for six
months, etc
What are the rules for a deceased tenant? There is no REAL estate, just
the items he left, worth little.
What should I do?
Thanks. Any advice you can give me would be apprecated.
Allan
