[Ed. How would you handle this if you were me? Or, if you are a alarm dealer, how would you handle it?] My day with Liberty Bell Alarm Two guys came to my house today, and both were not older than 25 years of age. They started around 8am and finished after 2pm. I had 11 entrances to my house and a pet-proof motion detector. They finished the job, but I suspect my pet-proof motion detector is not working properly. They are both friendly guys, but the novice told me that this was his 5th day on the job. They didn't have vacuum cleaners, because the one they had broke on previous jobs. So they used my Oreck XL and my hand vac. Timmy came up to me and told me, "I think I broke your vacuum cleaner". I told him I didn't know what to say about that. It sure sounded different. I later tested it myself. It wasn't the same anymore. I removed any obstructions and checked to see if the bag was full. It wasn't. So I later called their sales rep to tell him about it. He said he would call me back on Monday to see what he could do about it. So even after I told the lead tech that their cleaning job left something to be desired, he hand-picked debris off the floor, but never completed the cleaning up part. He apologized, but said their was nothing he could do since my hand vac needed re-charging. He told me when his vac dies, he has to wait long enough before the company will get him a replacement. Other than those snags, they were the cheapest local guys in town (had lots of estimates). Haven't fully tested the system to see if its working. I'll report back then. $550 plus 1 year of mont (@ $25/month) or $650 local $50 permit fee to County. They covered all of the entrances/windows with contacts, 1 motion detector, keypad, int siren, ext bellbox. I went for local alarm only. Total of $700. -- I just realized it's past 5pm, and Mike Thomas never called me back about my vacuum cleaner. Gee, what a surprise. I might call his manager tomorrow. Bet they give me some song & dance about how they're not responsible for damage done during installations. A: They didn't ask to use my vacuum cleaners, they just asked where they were. And B, those vacuum cleaners should've been provided to the techs for their use. They would have to be liable for negligence. -- Mike Thomas finally just called me back (12/9/03 3:40pm). He asked if I was getting antsy (I had been leaving both him and Ron Buzzard-Manager voicemails). Mike said the tech had been sick for a while so Mike couldn't talk to him yet. He said basically someone would have to come by and pick up my vacuum to have it looked at. I told him that since I have an appnt on Friday, someone could pick it up then. So basically, I will wait til I get it back before I pronounce judgement. -- I surrendered my Oreck XL9200 (SN 9200XXXB08781) to them on Friday 12/12/03 for diagnosis. Let's see how they handle this.

That's the problem right there... If it had been a "Kenmore", it wouldn't have broke... :-))

Why do you think the detector is not working?
They are both friendly guys, but the novice told me that this was his 5th day on the job. They didn't have vacuum cleaners, because the one they had broke on previous jobs. They should not have broken your vacuum, but it sounds like the tech was honest about it. He might just as easily have put it back and said nothing. Also, you are splitting hairs when you say they didn't ask to use them. They asked where they were, and you told them, right? Sounds to me like you permitted their use. What exactly broke?
Mike Thomas finally just called me back (12/9/03 3:40pm). He asked if I
was
getting antsy (I had been leaving both him and Ron Buzzard-Manager voicemails). Mike said the tech had been sick for a while so Mike couldn't talk to him yet. He said basically someone would have to come by and pick up my vacuum to have it looked at. I told him that since I have an appnt

You seem to have already pronounced judgement. The alarmco is making an effort. Why not relax a bit?
I surrendered my Oreck XL9200 (SN 9200XXXB08781) to them on Friday
12/12/03 Surrendered? C'mon. You called them and they came to pick it up to have a look. Sounds like a good faith effort to me.
for diagnosis. Let's see how they handle this.
Keep us posted. js

$550 plus 1 year of mont (@ $25/month) or $650 local
$50 permit fee to County.
Say what? Hopefully this permit fee is for construction and nothing else. If it is, that's the company's expense, not yours. Take the vacuum cleaner to the company, give them a choice. Fix or replace then come remove your system.

OK enough! Send it to the insurance company and deal with it. You spent thousands on a house with one smoke detector and an alarm the rings logical only.

That's funny... mine sucked before it broke, but aftwards, it didn't suck at all!

I got so caught up in the humour of the thread, I never actually read much of it... you guys use vacuum cleaners? I have a little wisk broom type thingie with a mini dustpan that fits in my pouch. I tidy as I go, must look anal but I think it's a tortoise and hare thing, if you leave drywall or wood chips, you end up tracking them through the house. I'm also REALLY careful with Quad droppings. I always strip in to my pouch or an empty box; I'm in the habit of twisting wires together before lopping off the end of a striped multi-pair, blah blah blah... what's the vaccuum for?

It's for the sunflower seeds... and the peanut shells...

I use it for sheetrock dust mainly. I can put down a dust blanket, but invariable the dust settles outside the range of the blanket. I do more commercial than resi and people coming in and out and wind blowing in from the doorway wreaks havoc.
