The iPod thread is a bit off-topic, but I understand some people use iPods to dump images from their digital cameras. However the point still is this is a $299 device, that has an 18 month battery that has to be factory replaced for $250. I guess one is renting, not owning an iPod.

I had my first one for about a year and traded up to a 3rd generation model. Hasn't been quite a year yet for that one. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

except that its $99 for battery replacement from apple, $50-60ish for a do it yourself kit (third party), and $59 for an applecare extended warranty which covers the battery. the $250 is for fixing *any* problem, not just for battery replacement. nevertheless, it would be nice if it had a snap on battery like a cellphone.

What? Please don't say that. Apple needs more ways to make money from ipod owners. ;-)

It _is_ off-topic, and I wouldn't use an iPod for image storage -- the last I saw, Belkin made the hardware for the transfers, and that gear was getting bad reviews. My wife's iPod is an original one that I bought her the year they came out, and she has had no problems with the battery. Those guys obviously had a failure after 18 months, but one failure does not a trend make. Other failures may, however. :-> Apple has a $99 battery replacement program now. So the thread is off-topic and seriously in error on the facts. But that won't stop the bashing, of course. -- Philip Stripling | email to the replyto address is presumed Legal Assistance on the Web | spam and read later. email to philip@ http://www.PhilipStripling.com/ | my domain is read daily.

AFAIK the *current* Apple policy is a $100 battery swap, or you can buy and swap the battery yourself for about $50 from online sources. It's annoying, but LiIon batteries do degrade over time, no matter what the device. -- Albert Nurick www.TheDeliciousLife.com albert@nurick.com A guide to the good life www.nurick.com in Houston, Texas

You can get a replacement ipod battery for as little as $50. The apple official replacement is $99. So @$#* off. In article <Xq7Sb.49556$9Ce1.48934@news04.bloor.is.net.cable.rogers.com>, ~ Darrell Larose ~ <me@here.eh> wrote:

Have you ever taken an iPod apart? It's full of sticky gunge and the wires connecting the battery with the works is so fragile you need watchmakers tools to handle them. Apple does not really want you messing with their little secret. Before the web campaign started the replacement was $250, now it's $99. Apple seems to have taken the worst excesses of Microsoft and made them their own - just look at that clunky piece of sh** Apple has the gall to call Panther...

And if it wasnt for consumers kicking up a stink then it would still be $250. -- Mark Heyes (New Zealand) See my pics at http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~markh/ "There are 10 types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't"
