http://www.vailtrail.com/newsdetail.cfm?NewsID=1772 Unless you were inside the Kobe Bryant courtroom Jan. 23, all you know about the daylong hearing is that Pam Mackey, the hoop star's Frodo-sized legal thug, played the race card. Mackey dealt from the bottom of the deck by needlessly, shamelessly and vindictively suggesting that Kobe's race had something to do with the alleged crime. "There is lots of history out there about men, black men, being falsely accused of this crime by white women," said Mackey, Bryant’s high-priced co-counsel, as the noontime court break approached. That might have been true when Harper Lee dressing like a ham on Halloween, but I don't see what race has to do with an alleged date rape inside a swanky mountain resort. Mackey knew the lazy lapdogs of modern media would lick their balls with delight over her verbal #@&@ slap. Her well-timed retort came in response to a rival attorney’s claim that sensational sex cases create a chilling effect on victims and prevent other women from reporting rapes. She used the opening to interject race into an already over-sensationalized case. But Mackey is a pro. Landing shots to the groin is nothing new for her. She’s a grappler from long back. Trained in the deadly Israeli martial art of Krav Maga. Said to be good with a knife and willing to gouge, kick and bite on a first date. Mackey and her cohorts on Team Kobe have already branded the accuser as a sexed up, suicidal, bipolar party girl. So why not toss in a Klan membership to boot? It's not like anyone is going to object. Here's a thought: Next time at bat, Mackey should call the accuser a Free Mason. I hear those dirty sons of #@&@ es are always on the prowl for a good time. Let's get real for a second. And let's all agree that The People of the State of Colorado vs. Kobe Bean Bryant is about date rape not cross burning. Too bad the gatekeepers of infotainment can’t handle that simple truth. Reality is a total buzz kill to them. They don't want the facts to get in the way of a good headline, or news crawl beneath Gerardo Rivera's moustache. Once Mackey turned Ebony and Ivory on its ear last week, the gentlemen of the press breathed a sigh of relief. The R Word was out. It was time to party. Mackey's one inflammatory sentence gave them an easy story. They could hype the race issue over lunch, finish their stories by early afternoon, then pound beers in Vail on the company dine. Since the 24-hour news audience demands fresh blood, the media let them eat racial tension. Seconds after Mackey hinted that the spirit of Strom Thurmond had taken root inside the accuser’s head, a flashy-looking LA type with Celebrity Justice broke into a smile. "She just played the race card," the bright boy told me, as we watched the hearing from the cheap seats inside Judge Terry Ruckriegle's courtroom. "That's your story." I rolled my eyes in sadness, but understood that every news service would salivate over Mackey's tangy treat. You should know that Mackey said only one sentence about race during a six-hour hearing. Believe it or not, a lot of real news actually occurred during that time. But no few newshounds cared about the court's new security measures, or why Team Kobe destroyed some of the accuser's medical records they had wrongfully obtained. Associated Press didn't say why Kobe's hand span will become an issue at trial, or why the defense will work its ass off Feb. 2-3 trying to keep comments Kobe told the cops out of court. Such newsworthy material came out in great detail last week. But those stories were not racy enough to generate headlines. Instead, virtually every news outlet, from AP to Reuters, to the Rocky Mountain News and the New York Post, went racial. As always, the media went for the short money on Wilson and gave the truth a one-way ticket to Palookaville. Celebrity, fame, hero worship, money and mental instability are all at play in the Bryant case. Those topics are fair game. Race has no business here and Little Miss Mackey knows that very well. Too bad Atticus Finch can't walk off the pages of "To Kill a Mocking Bird." Had that southern gentleman been in the house last Friday, he might have shot Mackey down like a rabid dog.

It is as likely that Kobe Bryant targeted a young Jewish woman because of her background, as any assertion that Jewish women are likely to falsely accuse black men of rape. Kobe claims to be Christian, and many Christians have targeted Jews because of the 'Christ crime'. In more modern times, the Black community has targeted Jews as exploiters of their neighborhoods and labor pool. There is no doubt that professional basketball is woefully underrepresented in those of the Jewish faith- a clear discrimination, and possibly indicative of an institutional anti-Semitism that is simply reflected in this unfortunate incident of Jew-bashing. Does anyone know about a prior exhibition of anti-Semitism by Mr. Bryant, or would this be his first? Chas

Do they mean becasue he was arrested by an admittedly racist sheriff using extraordinary procedures with almost no evidence? Why would anyone think race had anything to do with it?

She "dealt that card" only in response to the prosecution's witness (a women's advocate) dealing the "raped women card" from the bottom of the same deck.

Well, that was in response to the 'rich black athlete get out of jail free' card. Which was preceded by the 'provide whores for the athletes who play college ball' card- which is the one they're trying to explain all the rape cases in Boulder at CU with. Chas

Back to the "two wrongs make a right" logical construction, eh Michael? BTW, care to elaborate on that "only in response" assertion?

That's about as stupid as anything you've ever said. If someone attacks me with an illegal weapon, and I have access to another illegal weapon with which to defend myself, of course I'm going to use it. You expect me to quietly sit there and allow myself to be ravaged by the prosecution's gender card, because it would violate your silly nursery-rhyme morality to CANCEL IT with the race card? Thank you, though, for admitting that it was wrong for the prosecution to pull in the gender card.

I "admitted" nothing. I only referred to *your* logical construction. If you can't tell the difference between that and vouching for your premises, you might want to think twice about calling anyone else stupid. Still, thank *you* for your implicit concession that it was wrong for Mackey to play the race card, and that she did it not because she believed it, but only as a cynical ploy in which she exploited a racial stereotype in order to smear the woman her client is alleged to have raped.
