Hi all,
How many employees do you must have to have workers compensation
insurance in California?
I currently have three permanent employees, but don't have workers
compensation insurance.
Am I violating the law?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Sounds like it. See http://www.dir.ca.gov/DWC/faqs.html.

In New York State you would be in violation and subject to a heavy penalty

You're only violating the law if they're legal residents of the United
States. If they're here illegally, no problem. In fact, you can even pay
illegals less than minimum wage and skip the payments for their social
security and medicare. No one minds, because they're doing the work
Americans won't do.

Hi all,
How many employees do you must have to have workers compensation
insurance in California?
One. There are some unusual exceptions, but for an ordinary business
the only exception is that insurance is optional for employees who are
also sole owners.
I currently have three permanent employees, but don't have workers
compensation insurance.
Am I violating the law?
Yes. The penalties if you are caught are sufficient to ruin a small
business:
* A stop-work order and a fine of $1,000 per employee at the time of
the order.
* A fine of up to $10,000 and possible jail time if you violate the
stop-work order or if the state can prove you knew or should have
known that you needed WC insurance.
* A fine of up to $10,000 per employee (maximum $100,000) if an
employee is injured on the job and you are uninsured.
