Election Board Approves Washington DC Ballot Initiative Nation's Capital Set to Vote on Initiative 66 (smokefree workplace initiative) In November, Washington DC voters will decide whether DC employees deserve a smokefree workplace. Initiative 66, The D.C. Smokefree Workplaces Initiative of 2004, will eliminate smoking in all indoor workplaces (including restaurants and bars). "When the capital of the most powerful nation in the world decides that smokefree workplace legislation is an issue worth voting on, the world will take notice," says Joe Cherner, founder of BREATHE-- Bar and Restaurant Employees Advocating Together for a Healthy Environment. "This will be one of the most watched ballot initiatives of all time." Lead petitioner, Sharlene Kranz, lost her husband to lung cancer caused by exposure to tobacco smoke in his workplace. "We are eager to move ahead," she said. Six states-- CA, DE, NY, CT, ME, and MA -- and hundreds of cities have passed smokefree workplace legislation for all workers, including restaurant and bar workers. Rhode Island will likely become the next smokefree workplace state. Tobacco interests are expected to pull out all stops in effort to defeat Initiative 66.
