Are trademarks product-category specific?

My question is whether Trademarks are universal, or whether they are
product-category specific. An example will make my question clear.
Let's suppose I'm putting out a series of books, and, for whatever
reason, I want all the books to have a motto on the cover which reads,
"More Powerful Than A Locomotive."
Now I go out and discover that the comics book company has trademarked
"More Powerful Than A Locomotive" in relation to Superman comics. Or,
if they have not done so, perhaps a tractor company has done so for
their product line of tractors.
But, my books series has nothing to do with Superman, and nothing to
do with tractors. Maybe my books have to do with business leadership,
or something like that. Can I still trademark "More Powerful Than A
Locomotive" in relation to my book series, without violating the other
existing trademark?
Thanks in advance for all replies.
Steve O.
