rental car coverage in auto accident

Hi,
My car was rear ended recently and I need to take it to the auto body
shop. (It was a minor accident. Autobody shop says they need to
replace the rear bumper). Other party's insurance guys are not willing
to cover rental car if and when I take my car for repair. My policy
does not have rental coverage. My question is, Should I be getting
rental car coverage from the other party? If so, what should I do if
they say no to me? What are the common practices? Please advice.
Thanks a lot,
Jom

JOM,
It is not unusual for the other party's insurer to attempt to hold down
costs by dictating terms to you. Rent the car, send him the bill, offer to
sue if the bill isn't paid. Either the other party or his insurer will be
held liable for your reasonable damages. The use of a rental car probably is
reasonable damage.
Good luck,
Dave M.

It depends on the law in your state, etc., etc.
If all you need is just a rear bumper replacement you may not even need the
rental car. This only takes a day or two. I had my front bumper wrecked a few
years back--- and the body shop painted the bumper and then put it on the car.
It was a pretty quick job. In some cases, the body shop may not even to paint
the bumper--- they might be able to buy one which is already the correct color.
The standard rent-a-car rate in the typical insurance policy is $15/day which
is not really enough to rent a car anyway. That's probably not much of a
consolation to you :-)

Thank you for your responses. I'm going to talk to the auto body guys
to sse whether they can get it replaced on the same day.
