Parking ticket Mishap

cotell@aol.com (Deni)

I received a ticket for parking in a no-parking zone from 8:00am to
6:00pm. The ticket had the time 8:08am and the person was printing it
out while I was walking up to my car. The problem is, I was at my car
at 7:58am according to my cell phone which meant my car was still
legally parked. I was too disoriented to even say anything and by the
time I noticed he already drove away.
Upon closer examination the ticket is incorrect. The address, car make
and color is right but the license plate number is completly wrong
(not even one letter right).
This is a $45.00 ticket so I would like to fight it. Obviously, the
time thing is going to be my word against his but can I fight it based
on the fact that the license number is wrong.
Do I even need to follow up on it? There isn't really a way for them
to locate me right? (just asking but more than likely I will follow up
on it regardless)

Challenge it. The license plate does not belong on your vehicle, therefor it
is an invalid ticket.
I'd say the officer was doing you a favor.
He's standing beside the plate and can't write it down properly?
Before court, go ot the courthouse and get a copy of what vehicle that plate
should be on.
Use that as evidence to show the officer was wrong.
I have no idea if the judge will buy it, but he could let it slide.

If it's the wrong license #, then just forget about it, you don't have to pay
it.
How to turn off 'Maintenance Required" light:
1. Hold trip/reset button on dash
2. Turn key to "ON" or start engine
3. Hold button til light goes out

I think you're cool. Just forget about it. It doesn't have your name or
license number. Don't bother with it. If they ever try to collect from the
person with that particular license number (if such a person exists) he/she
can contest it pretty easily.

Okay, here's a follow-up to my mishap. Upon closer examination, I
discovered a mistake on my part. My front license plate is different
than my back!! When I leased this car I received new plates from the
DMV. I accidently put on the new (correct) plate on the back and the
plate that was on my old car was attached to the front. The incorrect
front plate was recorded on the ticket.
Even though I'm still tempted to fight it the based on the fact that
he gave me this ticket 5 minutes before it was illegal to park there;
since he probably saved me a few bucks (if I was ever pulled over for
a traffic violation) I'm going to go ahead and fork over the $45.00.
Am I'm correctly assuming that this older license plate can still be
traced back to me?

[State is California, apparently.]
Since the old plates came from a vehicle registered to you, then
likely they will be able to trace it. Sometimes they record the VIN on
the ticket, which will make it that much easier to trace (and that
much harder to deny that they ticketed the right vehicle).
You should get the plates put on right before you get caught for
incorrect plates, which is a more costly violation.
Parking tickets in California are civil and do not go through the
Superior Court: you can request that the issuing agency review and
withdraw the citation; and if the agency does not do so to your
satisfaction, you can request a hearing before a supposedly impartial
examiner. The parking ticket is supposed to have the contact
information that will enable you to start this process.
For less than $400 in parking tickets, the worst that will happen if
you blow it off is that your next registration renewal will be refused
until you pay up. By then it will be somewhat more expensive.
