The California National Organization for Women has criticized the
attorney representing NBA player Kobe Bryant, as well as the national
media, for mistreating and further victimizing the woman who has
accused Bryant of rape.
"Of course Mr. Bryant is innocent until proven guilty," said
California NOW President Megan Seely, "but the way Mr. Bryant's
counsel is handling this case, and the egregious lack of ethics the
media are showing in their coverage of this case, have gone too far
and must stop."
California NOW expressed outrage at Bryant's attorney, Pamela Mackey,
who has violated victim protections by repeatedly naming the alleged
victim and alluding to her sexual history in the courtroom.
California NOW asserts that outside the courtroom, the media and some
"men's rights" groups have named the alleged victim publicly, and
attempted to blame her and mollify her accusations.
"Will we see a different standard of justice and public scrutiny for a
man who has sports-star wealth and power?" asked Seely. "The women's
movement fought long and hard to protect women who say they've been
raped from being raped further by the courts and the public. Before
that, women had a hard time finding justice for the crimes committed
against them. Women were treated by courts of law and public opinion
as liars and hysterics; trials included unrelated and embarrassing
examinations of the woman's sexual history, and convictions were rare.
We have come too far ---- instituting laws that protect rather than
further victimize women ---- to have a case handled this way. It is
completely unacceptable."
Ut oh. This is really gone cause a dilemma for radical looney left-wing
sheeple-lamers. Who to jock? Pammy-Kolby or NOW?
