Further to my "Lawyer interested in a class action??" thread... Finally after 9 tries we have a human intervening, well, I think it is a human. Surrounded by the "standard" form letter BS here's what we received this morning. "When an e-mail address is placed on the blacklist, it is not due to spam but your computer may have a potential virus that was detected." MAY have a POTENTIAL virus, what BS is that all about?? How can they DETECT a potential virus we MAY have. I may be growing taller and my feet potentially increasing to size 13's too. This sounds like a fishing expedition by the isp gathering "genuine" IP addresses. Have they summarily blacklisted everyone then take them off as they verify their IP address?? Maybe they don't automatically black list the biggies like AOL, MSN etc etc, just tromp all over the little folk out there. We have never had a virus, and due to our vigilance we will never have one in the future, so that can't be valid. Beats the crap outa-me what that is all about. I am ignoring it and let their customer worry about denial of email service. -- Kind regards, Jenny and her tribe of survivors.

Surrounded by the "standard" form letter BS here's what we received this morning. "When an e-mail address is placed on the blacklist, it is not due to spam but your computer may have a potential virus that was detected." MAY have a POTENTIAL virus, what BS is that all about??
One definition of "potential virus" is an attachment of executable type, such as .exe, .pif, .scr, that are commonly used by viruses to spread and may be executed automatically by some Windows mail clients. Considering the magnitude of the problem with viruses, I don't think it is unreasonable to prohibit *ALL* executable attachments without trying to figure out whether it matches the pattern of a known virus. Just using a virus scanner will let through new viruses that haven't been identified yet (and new ones have been coming in at an amazing rate). So, some ISPs reject all emails with executable attachments, whether they have a virus or not. (Many ISPs also drop port 135 packets whether they are malicious or not, and outgoing port 25 traffic from dialup lines to mail servers other than their own whether it is SPAM or not. It is rather difficult for a router to detect whether opening a port 25 connection is going to carry SPAM until the connection is open and the content is actually sent). I don't know of any ISPs who then cancel a customer account for sending an executable attachment without determining that it IS a virus. Some businesses reject *ALL ATTACHMENTS*. Period.
How can they DETECT a potential virus we MAY have. I may be growing taller and my feet potentially increasing to size 13's too.
If your email has an attachment with a file extension of one of the many, many executable types recognized by Windows, that's a potential virus. And, of course, viruses forge email return addresses, so identification of an account (rather than an IP address) that sent the virus may be tricky, and likely impossible without the cooperation of the ISP whose network it was sent from (especially in a dialup-line or dynamic-ip situation). You can easily get flooded with complaints about a virus if someone you know (and who has your address in their address book) is infected.
This sounds like a fishing expedition by the isp gathering "genuine" IP addresses. Have they summarily blacklisted everyone then take them off as they verify their IP address??
Yes, I use a personal white list. That means the ENTIRE WORLD except for a few select email addresses goes into a folder that gets reviewed quickly once a week or so and if the sender or subject line doesn't look interesting, it never gets read. If the email contains HTML, uses a foreign character set, or contains executable attachments, chances are I won't even look at it at all. That's quite different from an ISP doing it, though.
Maybe they don't automatically black list the biggies like AOL, MSN etc etc, just tromp all over the little folk out there.
Yep, my white list blocks all those guys. I don't think there's a single exception for AOL or MSN, because the people I correspond with don't happen to use them.
We have never had a virus, and due to our vigilance we will never have one in the future, so that can't be valid. Beats the crap outa-me what that is all about.
It is surprising how many administrators do not know that viruses use forged return addresses, and get quite upset that I'm not willing to take their messages about "YOU MAY HAVE A VIRUS" seriously when the email address in question belonged to a computer that's been dismantled for several years. Get your own domain name and get a host that offers full e-mail services. Use that as your main e-mail source and screw the ISP. I have my own domain and I keep getting a virus sent to me so I found a way to block it from even getting to me. I was on earthlink for a whole week once. They had just installed a new spam filtering software thing on their system and it blocked me from posting to newsgroups real quick. I wrote to public relations and they made the adjustments for me. What you may have to do is write to the ISP via snail mail and explain the situation thoroughly. Only then will a real human actually read the mail and act upon it.

May be a good thing, although I've had intermittent blockages on my Earthlink postings.

Well, you violated their TOS and posted pictures of naked kids to a non-binary group, just like you did with your MSN account before they nuked your account. http://www.google.com/groups?as_q=Earthlink%2C%20Bullis&safe=images&ie=UTF-8 &oe=UTF-8&lr=&hl=en

They did *what*, St00pid? Earthlink booted you, you threatened Alan Atwood with a lawsuit, and you scurried to Wisconsin ahead of the Kentucky State police investigation. It's all archived, Bullis.

No, I'm afraid not. I just exceeded their post quota -- possibly because I couldn't remember the moderator's E-mail address to report a few forged binary posts in moderated non-binary groups, so I reposted them.

No earthlink did not. Read the first post you link to below. I terminated the account because I was moving. I was going to terminate the MSN account anyway so that made no difference. Why? Moving to an area where neither had access plays a big role as to having an account with them.

Informant is a ranting card carrying lunatic. He fails to note that he's been booted off more services in two years than most ever do in a life time. He spends all of his free time keeping track of what I post to use against me in his sick world. Here he's showing what an ass hole he really is.

your account., Bullis.
I saw that Bullis once again made the claim about you losing more accounts in the past two years than anyone else. Odd thing to say seeing as how there is a ton of proof regarding the accounts Bullis has lost over the past two years yet I see no evidence for you. Your Google history goes back to December 2002 and from the get go you have used Supernews, just as you do to this day. Could you please point out some of those accounts you lost over the past two years? Bullis only seems interested in making the claim without any proof. Please do so right away so we can make fun of you and all those accounts you lost. I for one plan to ignore the fact that Bullis lost his own Supernews account quite some time ago, which was obviously a mistake because clearly he is a victim while you are the bully, constantly feeding your ego.

Quoting your own lies from back then doesn't count, Mr. Bullis. If you were moving, why pay Earthlink for only a week? Here, read this one for yourself. I'll take the honorable Rick Buchanan's word over your lying baboon azz any day. But then, I was there. http://www.google.com/groups?q=g:thl3147186397d&dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm= 377977e1.307033993%40209.242.64.104 From: Lysander Spooner (buchanan@cybernex.net) Subject: Re: Dear gods.......I'm back Newsgroups: news.admin.net-abuse.usenet Date: 1999/04/26 On Sun, 25 Apr 1999 23:36:02 -0400, "Richard B" <richbull@earthlink.net> wrote:

It will be over when god buchanan has been hauled into court and the judge says, "Sorry to say this Mr. Buchanan, but your guilty as hell. Pay the man."
What damages have you incurred?
What you people are doing may be more criminal than this.
Cite the law.
I have not yet found any legal basis for your actions, you merely assume that a person using the name in his return path is violating some law.
Not me. If I did I wouldn't cancel them. I'd leave it to the authorities. It's net-abuse.
To Rick Buchanan, your e-mail to me stated that the USA Constitution has no authority?
Lysander Spooner stated that. (See "No Treason...")
What gives you the right to be doing what your doing in the first place?
Emminent Domain? Divine Right of Kings? How about individual liberty?
For your information sir, New Jersey has ratified the Constitution making
it
a part of the USA, not a foreign country.
I never signed it, so how can it be binding on -me-?
Furthermore sir, I have been checking into oxfordsystems claims of domain name copyright. It just may turn out that mr. atwood has no legal grounds to stand on. As there are at least two other companies in the USA that use the name "Oxford systems". One deals in liquid oxygen, and the other in software. "Oxford" in itself, is a city name as well as a family name. You might know of the most famous City of Oxford in the UK? Or how about Miami University in Oxford Ohio?
I was ready for you this time. I've got a clear inflatable pillow tied to the front of my monitor! I can bang my head now without damage to screen or noggin. It makes the writing look real funky though...
As long as you calm your ass down, leave my posts alone from now on, we
just
might get along.
Don't try anymore binary tantrums, and we may at that.
Until we get to court that is.
Take a number. -- Rick ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----
I was going to terminate the MSN account anyway so that made no
difference. Yet you squealed and ranted and threatened lawsuits after committing your net-abuse, Bullis. It didn't fly back then and it doesn't fly now.

Ask you neighbor, Sharon B. She knew the names of the officers. That was after your shotgun waving threats. I also believe her over your lying baboon azz. I was there. Mr. Bullis, unlike you, I have never lost an account. Your net-abuse, however, is well documented.

Oh, I had a Newscene account that's archived back to Feb. 2000 under this nick. Same deal as Supernews; Bullis lost his, I kept mine. St00pid really hates that. He didn't keep his Giganews account long enough (three days) for me to get out a credit card. But, here's few gems. Quite so, and the Supernews admins unbelievably nuked St00pid's account to cinders while unfathomably allowing me to keep mine. It must be that Bullis is bold and brave and I just hide behind secrecy.
