Do attorneys specialize?
Gordon Roy Parker seems to think they don't.

Oh? She couldn't apply pro hac vice? I've never seen her
once mention anything that you just mentioned. She's
always been free with her commentary before.
Lawyers do NOT specialize. Besides, she could easily APPLY
to be pro hac vice, and odds are the court would grant it.
If what you say is true, however, why on earth would her
opinion matter any more than say a layperson's? I've never
seen her qualify what she says that way. She has often said
that she's a lawyer when commenting on the law and on my
cases.

Uhhhhh... yes... of course, Not In The Way that Doctors *choose* a
Specialty such as Pediatrics or Oncology, but rather as a Consequence of
being the Associate who "develops" an Affinity for The Area of Law in which
he Most Often gets assigned Cases... that, and Lawyers will Naturally
Gravitate to Areas of Law that suit their Attitude & Values... Social
Outlook... Innate Abilities and the like...

From another thread, here's a quote from the American Bar
Association's own web page: (quote)
RULE 7.4 COMMUNICATION OF
FIELDS OF PRACTICE
(a) A lawyer may communicate the fact that the lawyer does or does not
practice in particular fields of law.
(b) A lawyer admitted to engage in patent practice before the United
States Patent and Trademark Office may use the designation "Patent
Attorney" or a substantially similar designation.
(c) A lawyer engaged in Admiralty practice may use the designation
"Admiralty," "Proctor in Admiralty" or a substantially similar
designation.
(d) A lawyer shall not state or imply that a lawyer is certified as a
specialist in a particular field of law, unless:
(1) the lawyer has been certified as a specialist by an organization
that has been approved by an appropriate state authority or that has
been accredited by the American Bar Association; and
(2) the name of the certifying organization is clearly identified in
the communication.

So, according to the ABA's own web site, attorneys CAN specialize and
call themselves specialists IF they follow the above rules.
