DENVER (Reuters) - Lawyers for basketball star Kobe Bryant (news)
asked a judge on Monday to order prosecutors to disclose whether the
state paid for a stay at an addiction treatment center for the woman
who accuses him of raping her.
They also asked the judge in the case to force disclosure of whether
she has plans to sue the basketball star or publish a book.
Bryant's lawyers said in a court filing that they have sent seven
letters to the prosecution asking for certain material and all have
been ignored. They now want the judge to require that the materials be
handed over.
Defense lawyers Hal Haddon and Pamela Mackey said any information that
might help the defense must be turned over by prosecutors under a U.S.
Supreme Court (news - web sites) case known as Brady v. Maryland.
The defense said under Brady they have the right to know if the
accuser or her family received government funds under victim
compensation programs, including a stay by the accuser at The Meadows,
an addiction treatment center in Wickenberg, Arizona.
The defense also wants to see any notes or diaries the 19-year-old
woman may have kept about her accusation that she was raped on June 30
by Bryant at a Colorado resort where she worked as a receptionist.
The defense also wants to know if any potential witnesses have refused
to submit DNA samples and whether any witness has made retractions or
modifications to their statements.

Why would the state be paying for her to go to an addiction treatment
center? The taxpayers should be pissed about this.

It is none of their fricking business!
or publish a book.
As long as it is published after the trial is over it is none of their
business, as far as I can tell.

He hasnt even been found guilty yet, how the f*** can she get funds?

I thought she already did, under the pseudonym Shapiro.

Might indicate something as to her intentions for making this charge.

Were you distracted when reading this?
Defense asked the judge "to force disclosure of whether
she has plans to sue the basketball star", that is why it is their
business.
And after all it establishes motive for the false accusation (if
proven), or at least they will try to build their defense around that
point.
