Hell-- Drunk drivers kill and/or maim kids every HOUR in this country. If this campaign is really about saving children, then we must publicly expose the DUIs too - at least the ones that have harmed a kid. Here's the article. By Ken Kusmer Associated Press Writer Published: Mar 15, 2004 MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - Robert Enochs was starting to turn his life around last fall. He had moved out of his car and in with his girlfriend, and they had gotten engaged. He soon landed a job driving a tow truck. Then the local paper ran photographs of him and 62 other sex offenders on the front page. <snip> At least five of the 63 Muncie-area men and women pictured in The Star Press on Feb. 15 have lost their jobs, some of them because they had not revealed their past to their employers, said sheriff's Deputy Steve Case. Other papers around the country have run photos of sex offenders. But The Star Press may have gone further than most, devoting half of the front page of the Sunday paper to the photos. It also listed the offenders' crimes along with their home addresses inside the paper. <snip> http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAZ94LWURD.html

Why stop at that? What makes women and children so special that people who commit crimes against them should never be permitted to move on with their lives? Hell, lets print out pictures of everybody who has been convicted. I wanna know if I'm living near someone who got a speeding ticket 15 years ago, so I can make sure I'm out of the way when I see him/her pulling out of their driveway. The newspaper has an obligation to inform me if I'm living next to a burgler, so I can build a wall and mine my yard. Personally, I think there has got to be a line. I don't know where it is, and I doubt if any of us here will ever be able to define it, but I truly believe that this newspaper crossed it. "Civic duty" my ass. They did it for the hype and the sales. Mike

I think every damn one of them should sue the paper collectively for invasion of privacy and perhaps violation of civil rights. Yeah, ok. The information is public record. But that does not give the newspaper the damn right to publish the information anywhere. Not even on the front page. Mr. Enochs, the guy interviewed, said he had spent 2 years in prison for his one time wrong. What makes a child molester any more dangerous than a drug dealer? where are the photos of all those convicted and sentenced for drug dealing? I'll bet that would take up several pages. Meagan's law is a travisty to justice in America. A child molester is the only type of criminal who MUST register with the local sheriff and notify the neihgbors of where he intends to live. Does a serial rapist do that? No. Not even a convicted multi-murderer. Not even a bank robber. The term pedophile wasn't even in American vocabulary until the tv show "Quincy" aired an episode in which Quincy ranted and raved about the murderer of a little girl being a pedophile. Megan's law was created because of the actions of ONE person who comitted murder. So why are drug dealers, DUI offenders, and all the others treated so differently? Because they don't get the headlines. Have a two car crash right in front of the newspaper office. You never hear about it. Include a truck, it goes on the front page. News reporting isn't about informing the people. It's about how to sell the newspaper and make money.

his dealing? hear Brought to you by "Richard" the St00pid Bullis, Pedophile.
"What makes a child molester any more dangerous than a drug dealer?" "Meagan's law is a travisty [sic] to justice in America." And then of course there's the gratuitous -- and inaccurate -- television reference from "Quincy." It's almost as if st00pid goes into some kind of trace when he writes these things. Good lord!

his dealing? hear Brought to you by "Richard" the St00pid Bullis, Pedophile.
Aaahhh, my specialty! Child molesters/pedophiles average about 125 victims before being caught. And they historically molest again and again, even after being caught many times. The average number of victims in a lifetime is about 500 average! This is why EVERY organization that deals with children MUST be required to do a criminal background check on every single worker, not just the teachers and others in direct contact with children, but the incidental workers, like maintenance and janitorial staff too. Anyone that has a reasonable chance of having any contact with a child needs to be screened. Megan's Law is not about 1 incident, but about the other thousands such incidents that were NOT brought to public light. Megan's Law is a vital tool in protecting children from molestation as only about 2% of pedophiles are ever considered cured, and even then they are never to be trusted around children again. This abuse is also very extensive. The FBI now estimates that 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 4 boys will be sexually assaulted before reaching age 18. My work with prevention unfortunately seems to prove this correct. When talking about my own abuse at age 11 and my wife's extensive abuse many people come up to tell me about their experience. In women's self defense classes that we (RAD Systems) do blind surveys on shows about 1/2 the women have been sexually assaulted as children. The new men's classes are not much different.

Pedophilia is not just a legal definition, but a psychological condition. It is a MEDICAL definition first and foremost. It is described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

I think the line should be drawn based on how recent the crime was. If some guy was convicted of rape yesterday, then sure the press can run his pic. But if it was years ago and he's been released from prison, then the press should leave him alone as long as he causes no trouble.
