http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/175215p-152532c.html For seven years, nobody believed Fancy Figueroa when she said she was raped by a man who followed her home from school on her 16th birthday, broke into her Queens house and held her by the throat as he brutalized her. Not the police, not the judge - not even her parents. But now Figueroa has been proven right by DNA evidence, and her attacker has confessed. "I was 16, I was pregnant and they thought I was lying because I might have needed a way out," she told the Daily News yesterday. "They wanted to take me right off to jail." Eventually, Figueroa said, she was pressured to write a note saying she made up the account of the rape. She said she was prosecuted for filing a false report and sentenced to pick up garbage for three days. "Then, a year ago, a detective calls and says the guy who raped me was caught," she said. "I thought it was a joke. I was upset. I was so mad. I lost everything with my family because of this." Vincent Elias, already serving 15 years for raping two other teens, was identified as a suspect after his DNA matched evidence taken from Figueroa on March 26, 1997. Elias, 33, pleaded guilty in Queens Supreme Court Wednesday to raping her, and he will be sentenced to an additional 22 years. Figueroa, who is married and lives in North Carolina, said she is coming forward to help other victims. Late last night, the NYPD issued a statement saying, "The department will be reviewing how the decision to arrest this victim was made." But Figueroa said she forgives the two detectives who pressured her to recant. "There was a point where I was just so upset with them," she said. "I felt they hurt me more than the rapist hurt me. He just came and left, but for six years nobody believed me. I lost my family. I lost my freedom. I lost a little of my sanity." The nightmare for the Newtown High School student started when Elias broke into her Maspeth home shortly after she came home from school. "All I'm thinking is, 'I'm going to die on my birthday,'" she said. "It was only minutes, but it seemed a lot longer. He never said a word. Then he just walked out the front door like he was just visiting." An exam found that she was two weeks pregnant by her boyfriend. The detectives "told me if I wrote down on a piece of paper that I was lying, they would help me look for this guy," she said. The admission was used to pressure her to plead guilty, Figueroa said. "I don't trust anyone anymore," she said. "I still don't like being in the house by myself. I still hear things and always think someone is trying to get in." But she says her religious faith has helped her forgive Elias. She will not attend his sentencing March 26 - her 23rd birthday. But she is sending him a Bible.

So not only was she physically raped, you have now emotionally raped her (c'mon, the way that some strident feminists bandy that word around - [if you touch her, its like rape] - you can deal with this accusation. For, since you posted this in alt.sports.basketball.nba.la-lakers, it is quite clear you have an agenda... and it is apparently self-motivated for political purposes. You took advantage of this poor girl's plight to advance your agenda. Did you get her permission to post this? Rape, by any other name....

Where is the closing parenthesis for this and how can you begin another phrase within the phrase in the parentheses? You should be arrested for verbal assault.

The cops who forced her to recant and had her arrested should also be disciplined, but the "investigation" into their actions will probably be just for show, as usual.

Nonsense. It is because there are billions of people on the planet and things that could be deemed bad from any given perspective happen all day yet people like you choose to focus on some idiot female with her legs in the air (in a world were sex is not the secret sacred thing it once though when convenient you want to pretend it still is). You are in denial of the hard life for people all around and you avoid big picture analysis of the actual catalysts and reprecussions of that which look at (like rape for example). There are four million men in prison most are single fem parent victims. And one third are sex criminals and a third of those are innocent say left jew lawyer studies. That's ca400,000+ innocent men in jail being beaten by animals and loons and you don't lense through that human condition problem but instead through some chick who got dicked rough. And many of those liked the boys anyway. And also the men who are actually guilty of crimes are still victims of the grand human condition(ie wasted life, a deep pain to the point of a cold stare) in various ways--including female induced wrongs-- but you types are more concerned with for example a 12 girl from another country who fell in love with her 20 year old immature uncle and then deceide 10years later that she should pull a [big brother provided] string and make an attention grabbing beef. (I don't agree that society's busybodies--powergrabbers looking for excuses each century-- should get involved and tells us that her "precious pussy was violated before she matured into a confident conniver who learned how to exploit people and hold out for higher bidders"; I say-- especially given larger human conditon scenarios, all around all the time--boo @$#*ing hoo). It has nothing to do with that chick and how she is oppressing anybody or whether she per se is lying. It has to do with a pyschological reaction to the one sided take on everything and onesided superficial bigoted avoidance of larger truisms about reality (admittedly complicated stuff), even if that pyschological reaction is not actually applicable to any one female in any one instance (ie for lack of words, a missplaced, though valid, vent). The justice system (if one would call it that) already has special privileges for females (ie the very definition of injustice). females don't always get their way and they are not always deemed the most imporant thing of the day. Also how does a DNA test prove rape? She said rape; boy said no; police for what ever reason smelled a rat; and then ten years late they have dna prove that... people really had sex. Ie I'm just rhetorically asking why the media gives half assed info. That spaniard mezito looks like a 20 something-- ie he was a teen when the alleged rape happened. Also the left let him in the country and the GOP did too; he was raised, most probably, by a woman; he was raised in a society where he is put upon in ways that lower males apparently can't tolerate. Ie-- I say again, one more time-- you types avoid bigger lensing in your quest to conform to bigotry against males. females are not just innocent victims and benign citizens who want love--I resist that pro fem spin; there is a deep dance 'tween males and females and you types are not contemplating it deeply. My reticence regarding pro fem claims has nothing to do with this literal situation in the paper --the truthfulness or guilt or innocence of these actual humans-- per se. And etc.

I'd say a multimillion dollar lawsuit would be completely justified. Not that it takes away what happened, but law enforcement should be punished for the crime they committed against her.

Ever? People heal. They may not heal completely, and they may end up on a slightly different path than they were on before they were victimized, but damages do heal. I find it strange that she would agree to sign something saying she'd made it up. She said the detectives said they'd look for the guy if she signed the paper. Why would she believe something that ludicrous? I'm sure that not getting support from her family members didn't help her mindset any, but her actions in her "false confession" certainly contributed to the problem. We should expect more from victims than that IMO. Laurie

I don't find it strange at all. We don't know the details but I can imagine being 16 and having to cope with having been raped and having the police accusing me of making it up. I can imagine not being able to think straight after a while. Many adults have given false confessions to the police and I can understand that too. I find it strange that someone can't imagine it and wants to put the blame on the girl. Ann

People can be pressured or manipulated into confessing anything (as was vividly demonstrated in Korea). What typically happens is the police grill a person for hours, pick out any little inconsistencies in the story (and there are always bound to be a few), threaten the person with being charged with several serious crimes, sometimes even threaten the person's friends and family, say they have evidence that the person is lying, then offer a deal if the "suspect" will "cooperate" and confess to a lesser crime.

Because 16 years olds tend to be ignorant, naive, and often gullible where authority figures are concerned? Especially if they are traumatized-and ESPECIALLY if their own FAMILY disbelieves them. And she may not be all that bright in the first place. Ever watch shows like American Justice-City Confidential-Unsolved Mysteries-etc? Many's the time I've watched them and found myself screaming at the TV set,"No! You idiot-they're lying to you!" when the police tell a suspect, just sign this confession ,and then you can go home-and the fool BELIEVES them, and is surprised to find himself immediately arrested and put in a cell! Sometimes the person is retarded-but other times, they're just young, frightened, too trusting of suthority, ignorant...I can see a sheltered, not terribly bright , ignorant teenager actually believing the detectives.

When you're young, there's no reason to believe that the people who are sworn and paid to protect and to serve the public would lie to you. that is, until they do. You see that's why she said she no longer trusts anyone. That's because she learned her lesson when they DID lie to her. It only took her one time to be burned for her to get savvy.

I see no reason to disparage the victim in this case. The only people Tiffany has 'focus[sed] on' in this thread are the morons spewing from soc.men and those who think just like them.
...(in a world were sex is not the secret sacred thing it once though when convenient you want to pretend it still is)...
This has nothing to do with whether consensual sex is or was a secret sacred thing. This is about rape, a crime which typically inflicts a devastating injury upon its victim. That fact may not suit your political agenda, but that doesn't make it untrue. It's also about a person who was falsely accused and convicted of a crime. I wonder whether you'd speak in similarly disparaging terms about a male victim of rape, or false accusation/conviction. I suspect not.
...You are in denial of the hard life for people all around and you avoid big picture analysis of the actual catalysts and reprecussions of that which look at (like rape for example).
I haven't paid much attention to Tiffany's posts, so I have no idea whether she's in denial over anything. With regard to the 'big picture analysis' , your inability to string a coherent grammatical sentence together does not seem to be particularly auspicious.
There are four million men in prison most are single fem parent victims. And one third are sex criminals and a third of those are innocent say left jew lawyer studies...
LOL! Tell me, are you in favour of left jew lawyers?
That's ca400,000+ innocent men in jail being beaten by animals and loons and you don't lense through that human condition problem but instead through some chick who got dicked rough...
Prison violence is certainly a serious issue, as is the conviction and jailing of innocent people, despite there being no clear picture of the extent of these problems, (left jew lawyer studies notwithstanding). I wouldn't be surprised if Tiffany "do[es]n't lense through" that problem, given that so many people don't. However I'm not going to *assume* that she doesn't until I see her not lensing. You OTOH clearly aren't lensing that the 'human condition problem' is that humans are individuals. A crime or injury against one can not be set off against a greater crime or injury of another, nor can an injury or crime against a person of one sex be dismissed merely because your agenda is to support the other.
...And many of those liked the boys anyway.
Many 'single fem parent victims' liked the girl too. Is that a reason to dismiss their victimisation?
And also the men who are actually guilty of crimes are still victims of the grand human condition(ie wasted life, a deep pain to the point of a cold stare) in various ways--including female induced wrongs--...
Yep. Odd, then, that earlier you dismissed them as 'animals'.
...but you types are more concerned with for example a 12 girl from another country who fell in love with her 20 year old immature uncle and then deceide 10years later that she should pull a [big brother provided] string and make an attention grabbing beef...
As a matter of interest, where would you draw the line, age-wise? Or would you not draw one. My three-year old niece adores me. Would it be OK for me to @$#* her?
...(I don't agree that society's busybodies--powergrabbers looking for excuses each century-- should get involved and tells us that her "precious pussy was violated before she matured into a confident conniver who learned how to exploit people and hold out for higher bidders";...
My God, what a misogynist you are!
I say-- especially given larger human conditon scenarios, all around all the time--boo @$#*ing hoo). It has nothing to do with that chick and how she is oppressing anybody or whether she per se is lying...
True. She'll be accused of it whether or not she was.

Also true (both your observation of the one-sided attitude of society with respect to gender issues, and that the behaviour Tiffany complains of is in part a reaction to this). However that the behaviour is understandable, doesn't make it excusable. [...]
Also how does a DNA test prove rape? She said rape; boy said no; police for what ever reason smelled a rat; and then ten years late they have dna prove that... people really had sex. Ie I'm just rhetorically asking why the media gives half assed info. That spaniard mezito...
So you're a racist as well as a sexist.
...looks like a 20 something-- ie he was a teen when the alleged rape happened.
I've often commented about the way women are routinely presumed guilty of making false accusations, even when this is not proven. Here we have the reverse. An admitted, convicted rapist is presumed innocent. So much for 'just rhetorically asking...'.
Also the left let him in the country and the GOP did too;...
I'd blame the jew lawyers, myself. However, I don't see anything in the article to suggest he was an immigrant.
...he was raised, most probably, by a woman;...
It must be her fault then.
he was raised in a society where he is put upon in ways that lower males apparently can't tolerate.
It's society's fault. It's everyone's fault but the rapist's.
Ie-- I say again, one more time-- you types avoid bigger lensing in your quest to conform to bigotry against males. females are not just innocent victims and benign citizens who want love...
True.
...--I resist that pro fem spin;...
Yet you buy into the pro hom spin that paints this picture in reverse.
there is a deep dance 'tween males and females and you types are not contemplating it deeply. My reticence regarding pro fem claims...
Tiffany was not discussing pro fem claims, but pro vir claims, specifically the attitudes of those who vilify female victims, alleged victims, and in some cases women wh

My, it's heartwarming to see this thread bring out all the freaks! We kicked it off with the "men are just victims of schemings sluts" crowd, followed closely by the "she's scarred for life"-ers. For balance, there was a little Christian-bashing, a little stupid-victim bashing, and a lot of cop bashing. Finally, it ends with a brilliant bit of sarcasm regarding pie. Why do people feel compelled to use a case to advance their agenda? She was raped - really raped, by a stranger. She appears to have been able to recover and go on. There are no murky messages here - no "he said, she said" scenarios. I could go on and on, but I'm wasting my breath.

Except that she was charged and prosecuted for a false rape accusation, when in fact she was a rape victim. Being raped gave her a rap sheet.

Poor girl was victimized repeatedly.
Yeah, three days of garbage pickup. The poor girl is scarred for life. Men who are falsely convicted get off light, 15-30 years in prison.
Glad to hear the scum was caught and punished but nothing can ever repair the damage that was done to her.
Can you elucidate. Describe the actual damages to me. No one should be falsely convicted, but the penalty for false rape accusations is a joke. Tell me td, what do you think of this... --- http://www.cnn.com/2002/LAW/02/15/dna.prison.release/?related NEW YORK (CNN) -- A man who was released from prison after 15 years because DNA evidence did not prove his guilt said Friday it feels "incredible" to have his freedom. One of Bruce Godschalk's lawyers said his client is both "the luckiest man in the world" and "the unluckiest." Godschalk was arrested in 1987 for two rapes committed at an apartment complex near King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The arrest was based on confessions that he later said were coerced. He also confessed to an instance of indecent exposure at the complex, which he also later denied. [...] --- If his penalty was three days garbage pickup, false rape accusations would not be such a big deal. What do you say? The DA and police can put a lot of pressure on people, and they lie to them, forced confessions are far more common than we probably think. But as awful and wrong as it was, three days garbage pickup is a joke compared to the 15-30 year sentences men falsely convicted tend to get. If she was given 15 years prison time for a crime she did not commit, it would be a tragedy of the same magnitude as that which Bruce Godschalk faced. Conversely, if Bruce G got three days garbage pickup for a crime he did not commit, it would be equally wrong and awful, but it'd not be a tragedy.

She lost her family because they didn't believe her either.

So what's this got to do with the price of fish? Nothing. So sad that some of us can recognise when wrongs are done to both men and women but you can't recognise a wrong when it's done to a woman. You, Rich are the hypocrite here. Ann Glad to hear the scum was caught and punished but nothing can ever repair the damage that was done to her.

Funny, I don't see that in the story above. Men who are falsely convicted get off light, 15-30 years in prison.

What's the price of fish have to do with the fact that the penalty for FRAs is a joke?
Nothing. So sad that some of us can recognise when wrongs are done to both men and women but you can't recognise a wrong when it's done to a woman.
