My twin (same gender) I have *only* one alphabet difference in our names - the first letter of our first names. I moved to a city mid last summer that my twin had been living for almost 3 years since she got to US. In fact I moved to the property which my family bought in her name about a year ago. Water and sewage bill are in her name; other bills to this placehave never been in her name. She never lived here but I am not officially renting this place though) I recently became concerned that both of us having the same biological surname which we use as our last names as well as having same birthdates might cause problems down the road with regard to credit cards, and other financial matters. Should I not be worried about it based on these two facts? This past week, I have noticed that credit card offers in her name started arriving to my address, the address where she *never* lived but has the ownership. My twin is not detail oriented like I am and in fact, do not have good English skill, and I feel that to minimize any potential disaster, I should change my last name officially though I would prefer to keep my surname. So I think of changing to something like adding a couple of alphabets to my surname that would still preserve the meaning. BTW, it seems that, *recently*, cerdit cards offer to her are arriving to the address where she is living. I am thinking that all of a sudden, recently, she is getting these offers because of my cerdit history since she has not worked in US (only hlep family business and not offically on the payroll) since she got here. She does have credit cards in her name but not as the primary account holder. What would I need to do to chnage my surname by addign a couple of alphabets? After changing it on the US side, I can contact my Embassy and request to add on my passport showing Driver's License. Should I bother changing at all? Keep in mind that my twin is not organized and detail oriented and have poor English, i.e she doesn't read things carefully. So, I'd rather be safe than sorry. If I were to change the last name, would it be bettwer I do it at time of Greencard application that is coming up in less than year or should I do it ASAP. I don't want too much work in chaning the name and hence if it would easier to do it at times of greencard application, I would wait. BTW, I plan to get a private mail box (not from post office). Any guidance and suggestion would greatly be appreciated.

No, as long as you have different social security numbers.
This past week, I have noticed that credit card offers in her name started arriving to my address, the address where she *never* lived but has the ownership.
Yes, that is how they got her name, from the ownership records.
My twin is not detail oriented like I am and in fact, do not have good English skill, and I feel that to minimize any potential disaster, I should change my last name officially though I would prefer to keep my surname.
Your last name is your surname ... in the U$A anyway.
So I think of changing to something like adding a couple of alphabets to my surname that would still preserve the meaning.
Don't bother.
BTW, it seems that, *recently*, cerdit cards offer to her are arriving to the address where she is living.
Yes, of course.
I am thinking that all of a sudden, recently, she is getting these offers because of my cerdit history
Nope, nearly EVERY person in the U$A, and some dogs and cats, even get these "offers".
since she has not worked in US (only hlep family business and not offically on the payroll) since she got here. She does have credit cards in her name but not as the primary account holder. What would I need to do to chnage my surname by addign a couple of alphabets?
Won't make any difference.

Then change your name completely, not just a few letters.

You shouldn't do anything to disturb your greencard application.
BTW, I plan to get a private mail box (not from post office). Any guidance and suggestion would greatly be appreciated.

There is nothing to worry about. The fact that any of your household bills are in your sister's name means that she was put on a mailing list that was sold to the credit card companies. It doesn't mean anything else. The credit card companies have no idea who lives where until after you fill out an application.
I am thinking that all of a sudden, recently, she is getting these offers because of my cerdit history since she has not worked in US (only hlep family business and not offically on the payroll) since she got here. She does have credit cards in her name but not as the primary account holder.
Again, not likely. Credit files are keyed by Social Security Number. The most likely reason that she got these offers if that one of the companies that she pays a monthly bill to has sold her name and address as part of a mailing list.
BTW, I plan to get a private mail box (not from post office).
This likely will not do much in the credit and bill department. Companies like the phone company and gas company are going to want your physical address, and you will still be connected to the physical address on these mailing lists. The net effect is that you will likely get twice as many similar offers, one at each address. Even if you have an unusual name, there are going to be dozens or hundreds of people with the same name across the USA. The key is to make sure that your social security number is accurate on any paperwork that is related to credit. Then, every few years, check your credit files to make sure that there has been no confusion or mistakes. -john- -- ==================================================================== John A. Excellent advice. Even in spite of diffrent social security numbers, you might want to keep in mind that if you share the same doctor or service that often medical records get mixed up as to ailments in documenting. They know who you are but the clerk puts the note in the wrong file or chart. This is made worse if the letter difference is B/V, M/N S/F, of course! = =3D> Vox Populi =A9 wrote:
