Employee fight/stabbing-employer liability

At work the other day, one worker bopped another worker on the head
with a hammer, opening a big cut that bled alot but wasn't too serious
and maybe they didn't get medical attention. Said worker proceeded to
stab the assailant a few times, requiring a trip to shock trauma in an
ambulance, but the wounds were merely deep puncture wounds in flab and
muscle and the guy was home the next day. My question is, who pays for
the injuries? Is this a workers comp case just like cutting your
finger off on a machine? Is there any legal angle for either worker to
sue the company civilly? And a similar question, if a company hires
alot of ex-cons and inner city thugs, and one of them hurts you, can
you sue the company? And another question, this company where I work,
they aren't going to particularly care about this fight except to the
extent that it costs them money (other than retraining two new
employees), what will a fight like this cost a company?
