The below was posted in alt.dss.hack and concerns Directv's
attempts to collect damages in civil court for alleged satellite
piracy:
See <http://www.hackhu.com/Trial%20Summary%209.3.04.pdf>
So what happens to people like "Jeffery Goolsby" of SC, or "Diona Dunn"
and "Jerry Taylor" of IN who were found NOT LIABLE by a jury of their >peers.
Is it just -- We sued you ass. You were found NOT LIABLE. So sorry.
You're stuck with the legal fees.
Any recourse???
I think you're screwed, unless you can show that Directv knew that
their case didn't have merit from the beginning; that they were
malicious.
I've crossposted this to misc.legal. Perhaps someone there who knows
something about the law would care to comment.
Perhaps there is a way to recover legal fees. It is a shame that
when Directv decides to sue you, even if you win, you lose. You're
out more in legal fees than what Directv wanted to settle out of court.
It's a crappy system that allows Directv to be a bully.
But Directv is pretty deep pockets. That's good and bad: they have lots
of money if you win. But they can pay to put up a good defence should
you choose to go after them.
Well, let's see if this gets a reply from misc.legal.
