To be defamatory, a statement must contain a false but CREDIBLE allegation of fact which harms the victim's reputation by being believed. If I say falsely that Mr XYZ is a DRUNKARD that is clearly libellous, since anyone knows what a drunk looks like and I would be perfectly capable of judging it.
