Jury hears only one piece of DNA evidence linked Jodi Jones to murder
accused
A jury has been told that only one piece of DNA evidence was found to
link the murdered schoolgirl Jodi Jones with her boyfriend Luke Mitchell -
and there could have been a perfectly innocent explanation for it.
Scientists investigated the case for more than 18 months, using the most
sophisticated techniques available in Britain.
Scientists from three different police forces worked on the Jodi Jones
inquiry. Tests were carried out at laboratories in Edinburgh, Glasgow,
Dundee and Yorkshire - the latter used the most sophisticated DNA tracing
technique available in Britain.
Questioned by the defence, the principal scientist from the Edinburgh lab
said they worked on the case for about 18 months. It was fair to say they
left so stone unturned. She said they examined a whole range of material
from Luke Mitchell. They were looking for any connection between him, Jodi
Jones, or the crime scene.
Forensic scientist Susan Ure said they found one stain on Luke Mitchell's
trousers which matched Jodi's DNA. Donald Findlay QC pointed out that Jodi
and Luke had been going out together.
He asked Ms Ure: "Looking at that picture, in all of the DNA analysis you
carried out, you found one, one and only one bit of Jodi's DNA on Luke's
trousers and that could be a perfectly innocent transfer?" She replied:
"Yes, it could."
The trial also heard of the first search of Luke Mitchell's home by police.
One officer said they found over 20 bottles of urine in his bedroom. They
had also been told to look for anything relating to rock star Marilyn
Manson - and seized a CD by the rock star called Golden Age of Grotesque.

Does that mean that they took the piss?
