The Bush solution to this is to lower the poverty line. Its the same idea as saying a family makng $500 K is middle class, to be able to say with a straight face that a Bush tax cut helps the middle class.

Understand this is DELIBERATE. It is not that the Republicans can't stop poverty, they want to ENCOURAGE it. Why? Because the poor are not uppity workers. They will work for less and give no lip. Republicans always work to widen the gap between the elite and the common man. Their goal is Brazil. They have already reached Guatemala. "Never in human history have such genocide and cruelty been witnessed. Such a genocide was never seen in the time of the pharaohs nor of Hitler nor of Mussolini." ~ Mehmet Elkatmi, head of Turkish parliament's human rights commission on Bush's atrocities in the Iraq war. -- Canadian Mind Products, Roedy Green. Exactly! He just wants to make it LOOK like he is doing something. The thing is, to Republicans, that makes sense.

Considering that the US GDP/capita is about $38K, one has to ask how one determines the middle in that case.

The per-capita GDP says *nothing* about wealth or income distribution.

True! However, if the mode is $500K while the mean is $38K, I'd be very surprised, though it's possible -- the inhabitants would have to have very disparate incomes, however. It's not even possible for the median to be $500K without a substantial fraction of the inhabitants having a *negative* income. So what is the "middle", here?
