Cabinet discusses Patent law

Indraprasth (Pioneer News Service) -- A week ahead of the
WTO deadline, the Cabinet discussed promulgating an
Ordinance to amend the Patent Act, 1970. Commerce
Minister Kamal Nath said, "the Cabinet met and discussed
and Bill. Various suggestions were made on how to meet
out TRIPS obligation but decision will be taken soon."
The Commerce Minister said that the Cabinet is yet to
finalise which route the Government will take to meet
TRIPS obligation.
It is widely believed that the Government will promulgate
an Ordinance to align the country with product patent
regime. However, Mr Kamal Nath said that the route for
amendment is yet to be decided.
Mr Nath also hinted that various options are being
studied if the January 2005 deadline is not met.
The Cabinet also discussed setting up of pension fund
regulatory and development authority.
