? Getting a gay divorce ?

Amy and Betty are gay and live in NH. NH doesn't recognize gay marriages. Two
years ago Amy and Betty went to Vermont to have a "ceremony". It wasn't called
a marriage, but it did involve the state of Vermont so it was some type of
"legal union", but I don't know what it was called. Amy and Betty settled into
their apartment back in NH. They were happy and in love.
Like many marriages, Amy and Betty broke up. Betty simply moved out without
notice last month. Amy can only get the "union" disolved in VT if she is a
resident of VT and has lived there for at least six months. NH won't grant a
"divorce" because they don't recognize the union in the first place. Amy
realizes that she might eventually find another soul mate.
WTF should Amy do?
Luckily the only thing jointly owned is a very old car which Betty took with
her (and Amy doesn't want).

As a highschool graduate, I would guess that Amy should do nithung, since
her residence state doesn't recognize the "union" to begin with. I would
think chances for any legal issues concerning a new romance would be
non-existant. Such issues would be between her and God, and properly so, in
my view.

Nad,
While homosexuals may not marry as you describe they are able to enter
into binding contracts. If it becomes necessary to end such a contract then
a mutual agreement to end the contract would be acceptable. If the couple is
squabbling over the distribution of property et c. then they would go to a
civil court.

It would probably be an issue in contract. Divorce is at its essence
a contract, and the contract needs to be dissolved. (The default terms
of the contract is the marriage statute.)
