Most states have laws that govern this topic. In California, the
maximum deposit a landlord may charge is 2 months rent for an
unfurnished rental unit or 3 months for a furnished unit.

A Lawyer at citizensjustice.com. Its the best, written by a
lawyer who obviously knows whaty he's talking about.
