CENTER CITY - March 26, 2008 (WPVI) -- Police have charged one teen and are
looking for three others in the death of a man on a Center City subway
concourse.
The incident happened at 2:30 this afternoon in the concourse located at
13th and Market Streets.
Police say four teenaged suspects confronted a 36-year-old man. A SEPTA
police officer standing on the opposite platform saw what was happening.
"He saw four black juveniles around one white male. He saw the gentleman
making a defensive stance, as if he was guarding himself," said Captain
Steve Harold.
The officer went to investigate and the suspects ran off. The officer
managed to catch one of the suspects.
The victim went into cardiac arrest during the incident. He wasn't able to
give any information to police.
He was taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead a
short time later.
The victim was later identified as 36-year-old Sean Patrick Conroy of
Philadelphia. Williams says an autopsy is pending Thursday to determine the
specific cause of death.
Conroy was a manager at a Starbucks located inside the Marriott in Center
City. He was returning to the coffee house after a day at meetings. The
Starbucks closed for the day after learning of his death.
Conroy was engaged to be married. His fiancee was too distraught to comment.
Investigators said the four suspects are students at Simon Gratz High
School. They had apparently skipped school.
Homicide Lt. Mel Williams says one 16-year-old boy was charged with murder
and conspiracy; police are looking for the three others.

In the US, it's murder as long as they can demonstrate that whatever took
place triggered the heart attack.
In the US, it is only necessary to demonstrate that some action resulted
in death and that that action was deliberate.
Unlike the UK, there is no requirement to prove intent to cause injury or
death.

And there is reasonable expectation. - was a young guy having a heart
attack a foreseeable consequence of the youths' actions?
