I am just afraid that Dept of Home Land Security might decide to investigate me, so was wondering if it is worth it to save $200 in repair bills. I have some welding work I want to do on a cracked pump in my backyard. Are there any legal restrictions on possession, transportation, mailing by US Mail, or use of such chemicals like thermite by non-professionals without any sort of license in the USA, specifically TN? I was thinking of buying a accetelene torch, but thermite is much cheaper.

ab, I don't think a license is required in the USA. This stuff used to be sold on E-bay. It's also easy to make though hard to ignite and control Thermite welding, as best I can recall, involves heating a quantity of steel till it is molten with the thermite. You then pour the molten steel into the gap betwwen the two parts being welded. The two parts are normally pre-heated with a welding torch. So you'll need some steel, a few crucibles, some thermite, igniter, and a welding torch. Since you don't want to buy a welding torch this doesn't sound like it will be cheaper. Have you investigated renting a torch? Or taking this to a shop? Dave M.

You posted this to misc.legal.moderated. (Slightly different post.) I responded but since its moderated, it will take some time for the moderator to post my response. If you want to be paranoid, just posting your question on Usenet would be enough to trigger some sort of inquiry. To answer your question, don't attempt to do the welding using thermite. Not the right tool for the job. Also I don't know if a welding supply shop will sell you thermite unless you were a certified welder. Thermite is pretty dangerous stuff to play with unless you know what you are doing. I haven't played with it since high school. As to legalities of being in possession of thermite, its just aluminum powder and iron oxide powder. Now if you don't mix it in the right amounts, it will either blow up in your face, or not ignite. If its not thoroughly mixed, it will sputter and spray molten iron, which is not a good thing. Thermite is cheaper than a torch but its not the right tool for the job you're talking about and unless you are a professional, a tad more dangerous. With respect to your posts in alt.psychology, you see a therapist to talk out problems. therapists and psychologists are not psychiatrists so while one may ask if considered Prozac, the therapist would have to refer you to a psychiatrist for medication and the psychiatrist would work with you in determining your best course of treatment.
